Over 38 million people are living with HIV, but only 68% are on anti retro-viral therapy. HIV/AIDs remains one of the deadly diseases if poorly managed. And a pandemic affecting a lot of Africans. About 65% living with HIV live in Sub Saharan Africa alone.

1.4 million adults aged 15-49 living in Zambia are HIV positive and 1.1 million are on treatment. HIV prevalence is highest in Copperbelt (15.4%) and Lusaka (15.1%), Western (10.6%), Central (12.4%), and lowest in Munchinga (5.4%). there is an increase of about 0.31% each year, 28,000 new cases of HIV among adults. And 51,000 – 60,000 new cases among children.

Women remain disproportionately affected than men on a ratio of 2:1.

HIV prevalence rates vary considerably within a country, for developing countries like Zambia Mother-to-Child transmission, sex and intravenous drug use are leading causes.

Other causes leading to the increase of new cases in Zambia are:

  • Poverty
  • High Population in Copperbelt Province and Zambia’s capital (Lusaka).
  • Unemployment
  • Weak support to community based organizations

HIV/AIDs sensitization and mobilizations was among the first projects Women of Justice offered as a result of the growing number of HIV/AIDs positive cases in Zambia.

A lot of people suffering from HIV/AIDs face stigma in communities as a result they begin to have suicidal thoughts and depression. Most of the times, deaths recorded are caused by suicide and depression and not poor compliance of the Anti retro-viral drugs. We engage those who are positive in various activities and counselling sessions that help boost their esteem. Our community sensitization and mobilization raises awareness in the community, to prevent further spread and to treat those infected with the virus with love and compassion.

Help us end AIDs pandemic
